Instytut Oka / Warszawski Szpital Okulistyczny is currently the only commercial clinic in Poland offering implantation of telescopic intraocular systems for selected patients with advanced AMD and severe central vision loss.

For many patients, this treatment represents the last available option when standard therapies no longer provide sufficient visual improvement.

 

What are telescopic implants?

Telescopic intraocular implants are highly specialized optical systems implanted inside the eye.

The implant works similarly to a miniature telescope — enlarging the image projected onto the retina and helping patients use healthier peripheral retinal areas when central vision has been severely damaged.

This technology is designed mainly for patients with advanced dry AMD and significant central vision loss.

Who may benefit?

The procedure may be considered for patients who:

  • have advanced macular degeneration (AMD),
  • have lost central vision,
  • can no longer read comfortably,
  • struggle with recognizing faces,
  • experience major limitations in daily activities due to low vision.

Qualification is always individual and requires detailed retinal diagnostics and ophthalmic evaluation.

When other methods are no longer enough

For some patients with end-stage AMD, glasses, injections, laser therapy and standard lenses may no longer restore useful central vision.

Telescopic implants may help selected patients regain part of their independence and improve quality of life by enlarging the retinal image.

How does the procedure work?

The telescope implant is inserted into the eye during surgery, often combined with cataract extraction.

Implantation during surgery

The telescopic implant is placed inside the eye during an ophthalmic surgical procedure. In many cases, the procedure may be combined with cataract extraction.

Adaptation after surgery

After surgery, the brain gradually adapts to the enlarged image. Rehabilitation and adaptation exercises may be required to help the patient use the new optical system effectively.

Functional vision improvement

Patients learn to use healthier peripheral retinal areas more effectively. The goal is not to restore perfect vision, but to improve functional vision and daily comfort.

Not every patient qualifies for telescopic implantation. Successful treatment depends on several medical and anatomical factors.
